He can't stun them if thrown, just halt their momentum. Theo can pass through spikes and collect doorbells, and can't die to the fish monsters. You can also throw Theo to activate switches or stop fish monsters for a moment. You can't climb or dash while holding him, but you can still jump and wall jump. The last mechanic is carrying Theo in a crystal. They also can't see you if you're behind or in those tiles. There are also shield tiles, which fish monsters can't pass through, but Madeline can. There are red blocks, which fish monsters can dash into to break them. They can only die is if they are crushed by a door closing or a dash block squishing them. They can pass through spikes and collect doorbells. You can jump on them to stun them for a moment, and you can use the momentum from their respawning to go flying. If you are out of their line of sight, they will wander around the screen aimlessly. When they spot you, they turn pink and begin attacking.
They can slightly change their path mid-dash. Most importantly, there are fish monsters, which attack by locking onto your location and dashing at you in any direction. There are also moving spikes which just move back and forth. There are switches, and when dashed into, will open a door. When jumped off of in the correct timing, Madeline gains momentum and goes flying. There are dash platforms, which move on a track when Madeline dashes. There are torches, which when stepped next to will activate, lighting up a small area. In this chapter we are introduced to red bubbles, which, once stepped into, will carry you in the direction you chose until it hits something. Halfway through the chapter, there is a big mirror that Madeline gets pulled through, which is a darker and creepier version of the normal temple. The mirror temple is the setting of chapter 5 of Celeste.
